316L stainless steel coil is rolled stainless steel plate, which is commonly used in heat exchangers of pulp and paper equipment, dyeing equipment, film washing equipment, pipelines, exterior materials of buildings in coastal areas, and high-end watch bracelets and cases. It is also widely used in seawater equipment, chemical, dye, papermaking, oxalic acid, fertilizer and other production equipment, as well as photography, food industry, coastal facilities, ropes, CD rods, bolts, nuts and other fields.
Due to the molybdenum content, the overall performance of 316L stainless steel coil is better than that of 310 and 304 stainless steel coils. It is particularly widely used in high temperature environments when the concentration of sulfuric acid is less than 15% or higher than 85%. In addition, 316L stainless steel coil has good resistance to chloride erosion, so it is very suitable for use in marine environments.
Chemical Composition and Corrosion Resistance
316L stainless steel coil has a maximum carbon content of 0.03% and is suitable for scenarios where annealing cannot be performed after welding and maximum corrosion resistance is required. 316L stainless steel coil exhibits good oxidation resistance at temperatures below 1600°F (about 871°C) for intermittent use and below 700°C for continuous use. However, it is not recommended to use it continuously for a long time in the range of 800-1575°F (about 427-857°C), but it still has good heat resistance outside this temperature range.
Heat Resistance and Heat Treatment
Compared with 316 stainless steel, 316L stainless steel coil has a stronger ability to resist carbide precipitation and is suitable for solution annealing in the range of 1010-1150°C, followed by rapid cooling. It should be noted that 316L stainless steel coil cannot be hardened by overheating.
Welding Performance
316L stainless steel coil has excellent welding performance and can be welded by all standard welding methods. Depending on the specific application, you can choose 316Cb, 316L or 309Cb stainless steel filler rods or welding rods. Compared with 316 stainless steel, 316L stainless steel coil does not need annealing after welding to maintain excellent corrosion resistance.

304 vs 316
THE DIFFERENCE AND IDENTIFICATION BETWEEN 304 AND 316 STAINLESS STEEL
The two most commonly used stainless steels are 304 and 316 (or 1.4308 and 1.4408 in German/European standards). The main difference between 316 and 304 lies in their chemical composition, with 316 containing Mo. It is widely acknowledged that 316 offers better corrosion resistance and is more suitable for high-temperature environments compared to 304. Engineers typically opt for 316 components in high-temperature settings. However, there are exceptions. In concentrated sulfuric acid environments, it is crucial not to use 316, regardless of the temperature, to avoid potential issues. Mechanics are familiar with the use of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a solid lubricant to prevent thread seizing under high temperatures. This highlights that Mo is a high-temperature resistant substance, but molybdenum readily reacts with high-valent sulfur ions to form sulfides. Therefore, no stainless steel is entirely corrosion-resistant. Ultimately, stainless steel is essentially steel with impurities that offer enhanced corrosion resistance compared to regular steel, but it can still react with other substances.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
The corrosion resistance is better than 316 stainless steel, and it has good corrosion resistance in the production process of pulp and papermaking. Moreover, 316 stainless steel is also resistant to erosion by the ocean and corrosive industrial atmosphere.
HEAT RESISTANCE
In intermittent use below 1600 degrees and continuous use below 1700 degrees, 316 stainless steel has good oxidation resistance. In the range of 800-1575 degrees, it is best not to use 316 stainless steel continuously, but when 316 stainless steel is used continuously outside this temperature range, the stainless steel has good heat resistance. 316L stainless steel has better resistance to carbide precipitation than 316 stainless steel, and can be used in the above temperature range.
